If you want to use something

Short answer: you probably don't need to ask. All my work is released under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, so you can copy it, remix it, draw it, translate it, put it in your game, chew it up and poop it out. Anything. Credit me, don't sell it, and share what you make on the same terms, that's all I ask. Oh, and the soul of your first-born hamster.

Commercial use is the one thing that needs a word first, and the answer is almost always yes. Tell me what you have in mind: which work, what you want to do, roughly what scale. That's it — I'm not going to make you fill out anything. Good rule of thumb: if you intend to earn money from it, ask. If not, go wild. But if you intended to not earn money but suddenly do then you have a moral obligation to let me borrow your magic lamp for at least a week.

If you're curious why a free-culture person keeps the NonCommercial clause at all, I wrote about that in 2009. Short version: it's about being asked, not about saying no.

If you made something

Send it. Please. Tthe whole point of the Commons is that people build on this stuff, and I would really like to see it. It fills me with immeasurable joy.

If something's broken on this site

Twenty-plus years of posts moved house recently. If a link is dead, an image is missing, or a page looks wrong, don't keep it to yourself. Send me a message, laugh at my expense, and then feel an immense sense of pride when I fix it. And/or just laugh at my expense. I deserve it .
