What are NFTs?

MCMTuesday, March 2, 2021

There's been a lot of buzz lately about NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) which are a kind of digital possession that lives in the ether, but can also only be owned by a single person at a time. It's technically complicated, but basically boils down to: anyone can copy this image, but only I own the "original."

Yes, that makes no sense, but as with all things to do with money and pixie dust, it works because you believe it does.

I wanted to get in on NFTs a year ago, but got distracted by Bytown, and neglected to return. But now that things are slower, and my brain needs to recuperate, I've started digging up some older art projects to see what the fuss is all about.

Currently, I'm happy to report, it's a lot like KDP: if you aren't interested in playing the promotion game as a side hustle, you probably aren't gonna get very far. I've posted one or two things already, but not so much as a nibble at the moment. I have disappeared into the sea of obscurity. Yay!

All the same, though, I'm having fun creating art again, so that's nice. We'll see what happens over time — I could see the long tail of NFTs being a lot more interesting than the near-term bubble — but that's going to be measured in years, not days.

Stay tuned (broadly speaking) for future developments...
