My TR bugs ended up being a combination of the new jQuery (2.0.b something) and the latest fabric.js not working the way they should. jQuery was nixing the canvas on mousedown, and fabric was erasing new objects the second they were drawn. Reverted back a few versions and the thing works fine.

Now I just have to undo the damage I did while hunting for the errors :\
