“Where you heading from anyway, Mr Deschênes?” asked Gauthier. “You never said.”
“You never asked,” said Émile, with a pleasant smile.
Gauthier’s face was not so pleasant. “And now I am.”
Émile cleared his throat, trying to draw the conversation out long enough that they might turn another corner, get a little closer to whatever village they were approaching. Maybe Gauthier wouldn’t kill him in front of witnesses.
Or maybe that was just wishful thinking.
“By the river,” he said, knowing his answer wouldn’t suffice. “The Ottawa.”
“Bytown, maybe?” asked Gauthier, watching him closely.
